The Coast News was founded in 1987 with the goal of serving the communities of North County San Diego with local news that is interesting, relevant, and well-written. Jim Kydd started the business in his home garage where he built a dark-room to process photographs, wired the phones from him home to make sales calls, and set up a Mac Plus computer to typeset news stories, columns, and ads. We've come a long way since those days, but 38 years later our mission remains simple. 

The Coast News exists to make stronger community connections thru news and information. Through our weekly news coverage we contribute to a more informed community. We inform both the public through our city news coverage, but also our leaders in local government so they can more effectively meet the needs of the communities they serve. We are funded by advertisers who value our unique local audience and the work we do giving a voice to the voiceless and telling truth to power. We are constantly adapting to the new information ecosystem thru our website, social media pages, E-newlsetters, and podcasts. We know that our survival requires us to offer additional advertising products that compliment our traditional print, legal, and classified advertising revenue streams. To meet this reality, we are now offering targeted digital advertising, content creation, and more to our advertisers. We know that if we can deliver these cutting-edge solutions at competitive rates, we can continue our story-telling mission long in to the future.
